DONOVAN V. MITCHELL
Dear Family, Friends and Citizens:
It is with great honor and humbleness that I inform you of my decision to enter my name for the candidacy of “Chief of Police''. I am a lifelong resident of the City of Port Allen and truly invested. This announcement brings excitement knowing that I have an upcoming opportunity to serve our community and drive forward the Port Allen Police Department along the path of progressive police services. I am currently employed as a Lieutenant, which is responsible for the operational functioning of Uniform Patrol within the agency and possess over ten years of law enforcement experience. My professional involvement and investment created a longing desire to lead this law enforcement agency and facilitated the preparation to make complex rational decisions. My choice to run for chief of police was based on the tremendous amount of encouragement from my family, community members, law enforcement personnel, emergency services personnel and my pure passion for service.
Additionally, in driving the Port Allen Police Department and the population we serve forward, it is my belief in the “21st Century Policing Model '', a model that I have personally adopted to guide not only my campaign but the tenure of my law enforcement career. An eleven member committee composed of administrative level law enforcement personnel and community stakeholders developed the template. The model’s foundation identifies six pillars which I believe are very important in leading a law enforcement agency in the twenty-first century and more so, in the next transition. Building Trust and Legitimacy, Policy and Oversight, Technology and Social Media, Community Policing and Crime Reduction, Officer Training and Education, Officer Safety and Wellness. Inching towards success, there must be a straightforward transition and strategic implementation of effective practices, such as: “Police Leadership & Culture”, “Organizational Policy Making”, “Administrative Processes” and “Advanced Practical Training”. I will build a strong network and promote collaborative coalitions with other law enforcement and governmental agencies to ensure a sense of autonomy and support.
In closing, it is my sincere personal and professional goal to see that this organization not only prosper, but become an example for other agencies. I want to set quality standards that will propel the agency’s core operation into a new dimension of police services. I am thrilled to be your candidate for “Chief of Police”. The strength of this community is humbling, and I am looking forward to your support. Thank you all for believing in my ability to lead the next generation of Port Allen Police Department law enforcement officers. In an excerpt from President Obama's Open Letter to America's Law Enforcement Community (July 2016), he expressed, “We are at our best when we recognize our common humanity, set an example for our children of trust and responsibility, and honor the sacrifices of our bravest by coming together to be better”. I am truly excited and look forward to your continued support in the November 2024 election, a new direction for everyone.
“We are at our best when we recognize our common humanity, set an example for our children of trust and responsibility, and honor the sacrifices of our bravest by coming together to be better”.
